Medical Imaging Informatics

Overview

Medical Imaging Informatics (MII) encompasses all equipment, components, and accessories that products provide one or more of the following functions:

  • Analog or digital electronic display, capable of being used for more than one image acquisition device
  • Communication using local and extended networks, telecommunications, or video networks
  • Connection to image acquisition devices with analog or digital output
  • Digital archiving and storage
  • Information and workflow management in the imaging department
  • Image coding (e.g., data compression, error detection, and correction)
  • Image distribution
  • Image processing
  • Integration of imaging information with other information in the imaging department

MITA is dedicated to the advancement of medical science, the improvement of patient care, and, in particular, the contributions that high quality, innovative medical imaging technologies make toward achieving these goals.

Activities

  • Creates policies that help IT manufacturers assess and manage security risks in the safe exchange of healthcare information
  • Defines the future of MII by outlining standards, operability, use cases, and other related issues
  • Develops a regulatory framework for the regulation of health information technology (HIT)
  • Makes available educational content in the domain of imaging informatics and related topics

Applications

  • Picture archiving and communication system (PACS) and component systems
  • Radiology information systems (RIS) and hospital information systems (HIS)
  • Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD)
  • Teleradiology

Resources

  • The Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA), a division of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), is the collective voice of medical imaging equipment manufacturers, innovators, and product developers. It represents companies whose sales make up more than 90 percent of the global market for advanced imaging technologies. | https://www.medicalimaging.org
  • DICOMĀ®  (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is the international standard to transmit, store, retrieve, print, process, and display medical imaging information. | https://www.dicomstandard.org
