Focused Ultrasound Council

Diagnostic ultrasound, also known as medical sonography or ultrasonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. The ultrasound machine sends sound waves into the body and converts the returning sound echoes into a picture. Ultrasound technology can also produce audible sounds of blood flow, allowing medical professionals to use both sounds and visuals to assess a patient’s health.

Ultrasound is often used to evaluate:

  • Abnormalities in the heart and blood vessels
  • Organs in the pelvis and abdomen
  • Pregnancy
  • Symptoms of pain, swelling, and infection

Members serve as the industry voice for ultrasound manufacturers. They contribute expert technical advice, legislative engagement, and discussion of modality trends to the medical imaging industry.

Activities

  • Review and coordinate all MITA work in the development and comments of technical standards and specifications concerning ultrasound technology, both within the Association and in cooperation with other organizations..
  • Serve as a forum for sharing, discussing, and determining action on regulatory and legislative developments of importance to Members
  • Act as a point-of-contact for external inquiries to MITA regarding ultrasound and contribute ultrasound-specific expertise to MITA
  • Support initiatives that increase patient access to new ultrasound technology and applications and improve safety for workers and patients around ultrasound equipment.

Applications

  • Imaging systems
  • Monitoring systems
  • Measuring systems
  • Ultrasound transducers
  • Test instrumentation
  • Ultrasound display equipment
