Flexible Cords


Flexible cords connect electrical equipment to a power source. Flexible cords may have an electrical plug that connects to a power source or they may be permanently wired into a power source.

Products include fixture wires, appliance wires, flexible cords, bulk cords, cord sets, electric vehicle cords, power supply cord and cord sets, industrial portable power cable, and plug blades.

NEMA Members participate in a forum where manufacturers can discuss non-commercial issues, develop Standards, and advocate for government policies in the common interest of the industry.

Activities

Technical

  • Develops, maintains, and monitors industry Standards including Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Standards UL 62 Flexible Cords and Cables and UL 817 Cord Sets and Power Supply Cords; participates in the technical aspects linked to UL 498 Standard for Safety for Attachment Plugs and Receptacles and UL 1363 Standard for Relocatable Power Tap
  • Writes and maintains tri-national cord set and power supply cord standards through CANENA (Council for Harmonization of Electrotechnical Standards of the Nations in the Americas); works with CANENA to support harmonization of flexible cords standards (UL 62, NMX-J-436-ANCE, and CSA C22.2 No. 49) and cord sets and power supply cords (UL 817 and CSA C22.2 No. 21)
  • Participates in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) SC23G Appliance Couplers and Secretariat of the U.S. National Committee Technical Advisory Group (TAG)
  • Provides input in cyclical reaffirmations of the National Electrical Code® (NEC) by making and evaluating proposals in the area of its product responsibility
  • Publishes a new quarterly economic indicators report

Advocacy

  • Works with the Wire and Cable Division Safety, Health, and Environmental Committee and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in developing a new Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) Clean Air Standard
  • Works to prevent the increase of counterfeit power and control cable products into the United States
