Cable Tray


Cable trays are mechanical support systems that provide a rigid structural system for electrical cables, raceways, and insulated conductors used for electric power distribution, control, signal instrumentation, and communication. Metal cable trays are made of galvanized steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Non-metallic cable trays are made of glass-fiber reinforced plastic.

Cable trays are essential to a building's electrical system, supporting cables in the same way that roadway bridges support traffic.. They provide versatility and offer savings of up to 84 percent in labor costs.

Activities

  • Educates the marketplace through the Cable Tray Institute, which engages in research, development, education, and the dissemination of information designed to promote, enhance, and increase the visibility of the industry
  • Develops and maintains NEMA Standards and other technical documents and provide code development and monitoring services for NFPA 70 National Electrical Code® (NEC), which covers installation requirements for the safe application of cable tray systems, NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, and NFPA 79 Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery
  • Provides input on CEC C22.1 Part 1 The Canadian Electrical Code
  • Supports Standards harmonization and participates in NEMA activities with CANENA (the Council for Harmonization of Electrotechnical Standards of the Nations in the Americas) to harmonize Standards between Canada, Mexico, and the United States
