Electroindustry Business Confidence Indices

The Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) indices gauge the business confidence of the electroindustry in Asia, Europe, North America, and Latin America, and are based on the results of a monthly survey of senior managers at NEMA member companies. Those companies represent more than 80 percent of the electroindustry.

July 2010
NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American business conditions slid nearly 7 points in July, falling to 63.5 – its lowest level since January 2010 – from 70.4 a month earlier. While the index reading implies that the economic environment faced by electrical equipment manufacturers continued to improve on balance in July, a decidedly smaller share of panelists reported improvement than been the case over the last several months. June 2010
NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American business conditions posted a small gain in June, climbing 1.6 points from May to 70.4. The index has remained in a tight range since March, with monthly values falling between 68.8 and 71.7 – levels indicative of widespread improvement in business conditions across the electroindustry. Indeed, June’s results showed 13 panelists reporting an improvement in conditions from May, against only 2 reporting a deterioration. (The balance of the 27 panelists reported conditions were unchanged.) Full Report (140k)

May 2010
North American business conditions continued to improve on balance in May, though positive sentiment was less widespread than in the previous month, according to NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI). The EBCI for current North American conditions slipped 3 points to 68.8, with 10 of the 24 panelists responding to this month’s survey reporting that conditions were better relative to April. (One panelist reported a decline, and the balance saw no change.) By contrast, April’s survey showed 11 of 23 panelists claiming an improvement against one claiming a decline.  Full Report (139k)

April 2010
The economic environment facing electrical equipment manufacturers continued to show strong improvement in April, according to respondents to NEMA’s latest business confidence survey. While the Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions was unchanged in April at 71.7, it matched its highest monthly level since May 2004. Readings above 50 are typically associated with an improvement in conditions, and vice-versa. Eleven of the 23 panelists responding to the April survey, or 47.8%, reported business conditions had improved relative to March, while only one panelist reported they deteriorated. Full Report (139k)

March 2010
The business environment has improved markedly since December 2009, according to electrical equipment manufacturers polled in NEMA’s most recent business confidence survey. The Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions rose sharply in March 2010 for a third straight month, increasing 7.2 points to 71.7 – its highest level since May 2004. Readings above 50 are typically associated with an improvement in conditions, and vice-versa. As recently as December, the index had registered 48.2. Notably, none of the survey respondents reported that conditions deteriorated in March. Full Report (110k)

February 2010
NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions advanced sharply for a second straight month in February, climbing to its highest level in nearly 4 years. The index rose 7.4 points to 64.6 in the latest month, which came on the heels of an increase of nearly 9 points in January. Full Report (110k)

January 2010
The Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions rebounded in January following a disappointing December showing, rising nearly 9 points to 57.1. The index is derived from responses to a survey circulated to senior executives of NEMA member companies, and a value above 50 indicates that more respondents reported that the business environment improved from the previous month than reported that it worsened. The index had fallen below 50 in December (to 48.2) for the first time in five months, but this latest reading suggests that the modest improvements in conditions that characterized much of the second half of 2009 have persisted into early 2010.
