The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) crafts and executes advocacy campaigns and provides analytical products to assist Member companies with business decisions. The Director of Stakeholder Communications is responsible for working collaboratively across the organization to execute on strategic communications strategies and deploy tactical content plans that ensure NEMA reaches its target audiences through compelling storytelling and multi-channel advocacy campaign management. This individual is experienced in energy policy topics and advocacy, is comfortable producing content for a variety of platforms, has unparalleled editing skills, and conducts independent research to articulate and synthesize broad ideas into a focused narrative. 

The position builds and fosters relationships with key stakeholders across the organization and its member companies; develops, edits, and publishes written content; drafts content for NEMA’s social media channels and digital platforms, and provides support to members and councils.   

Reporting to the Managing Director of Communications, this position demonstrates a superior ability to grow the Association’s reach through persuasive and educational content, social media platforms, and search engine rankings. 

The position is in Arlington, Virginia, and allows for a hybrid work schedule.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and organize sources and information. Convey information with accuracy.
  • Collaborate and brainstorm cross-functionally to identify new content ideas that align with NEMA’s brand voice and amplify NEMA’s visibility. 
  • Write well-researched and keyword-driven content to boost organic traffic. 
  • Produce high-quality blog posts, website copy, social media posts, case studies, one pagers, op-eds, speeches, newsletters, and other collateral on industry-relevant topics for Hill and other audiences.
  • Create, execute, and maintain a content calendar that synthesizes with and amplifies broader editorial and thought leadership themes. 
  • Ensure consistency in writing style, fonts, images, and tone. 
  • Edit and proofread content produced by other team members.
  • Oversee content creation and analysis for social channels and public websites to drive engagement and grow the Association’s reach
  • Write and edit scripts for podcasts and videos, coaching speakers as needed 

Experience and Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or similar; graduate degree a plus
  • A solid portfolio of published writing samples across various audiences and platforms; advocacy-focused content preferred
  • Ability to collaborate and receive and reflect feedback
  • Minimum of two years of experience creating and measuring social media campaigns 
  • Minimum of five years of experience developing and executing advocacy communications
  • Ability to conceptualize, write, edit, and schedule content for multiple publications  
  • Ability to succinctly communicate messages and customize to different audiences
  • Solid understanding of SEO principles and content optimization techniques. 
  • Polished verbal and written communication skills and executive presence
  • Strong computer skills; Adobe Photoshop, Hootsuite, InDesign, WordPress experience a plus

The Electrical Safety Foundation (ESFI) is the trusted voice for electrical safety. The mission of ESFI is to prevent electrical-related injuries, deaths, and fires, saving lives and property through public education and outreach.

ESFI is the leading authority on electrical safety issues for consumers, workers, and the media. ESFI identifies and addresses evolving electrical safety needs and deploys effective electrical safety materials and programs that distill technical concepts into easy-to-understand concepts and related actions to promote safety. ESFI advocates for safety technology, compliance with codes and standards, and risk reducing behaviors.

ESFI is a 501(c)(3), with a governing Executive Committee and Board of Directors represented by leaders from within the electrical industry and related associations that are dedicated to electrical safety. 

The ESFI Executive Director is responsible for developing and deploying a Board-approved strategy encompassing annual fundraising campaigns, partnership initiatives, and safety programs focused on advancing and sustaining the mission of ESFI.

The position reports directly to the ESFI Board Chair with administrative oversight by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) Chief Growth Officer.  The Executive Director leads and manages the work of two staff members, and consultants, collaborating with its participating members staff, and managing the annual operating budget.

The position is in Arlington, Virginia, allows for a hybrid schedule, and may include up to 30 percent travel, both domestic and international.

Key Responsibilities

I.  Strategy:  Creates and executes an ESFI strategy that encompasses all aspects of fundraising, partnerships, safety programs, communications, outreach, and business analytics in close collaboration with the ESFI Board and their designated representatives.  Establishes annual and multi-year fundraising campaigns that support sustained expansion of ESFI programs and elevate the profile of electrical safety.

II.  Operations: Aligns and directs resources to execute ESFI strategy, particularly in the following areas: 

  • Leads all aspects of Board management, partnership development, recruitment, and fundraising.
  • Develops ESFI’s annual budget and execute within targets; meets or exceeds all fundraising campaign milestones.
  • Creates and executes annual plan for National Electrical Safety Month (May), using the month as a platform for attracting new partners and stakeholders.
  • Drives consumer education for recognition/mitigation of electrical hazards, emerging safety technologies for residential applications.
  • Serves as a valued partner to employers for providing safe, compliant working environments for their employees and customers.
  • Supports the adoption of legislation, codes, and standards that are consistent with mission of electrical safety.
  • Positions ESFI as the leading authority for electrical safety information, being available for media and building effective relationships for communication.
  • Oversees shared services agreement(s) with NEMA for Growth Office, Finance, and Human Resources Support.
  • Oversees all competitively sourced contracts with outside vendors arising from assigned responsibilities.

III.  Leadership:    Manages, develops, and evaluates assigned staff to successfully and efficiently carry out the ESFI mission and vision. 

  • Establishes annual objectives with staff members, provide feedback and ongoing coaching to achieve objectives. Invest time and resources in the professional development and retention of staff.
  • Communicates regularly with the ESFI Board and NEMA Chief Growth Officer to ensure alignment on strategy and operations.
  • Enhances partnerships within the donor community, engaging with existing donors to communicate the impact and value of ESFI’s mission while reaching out to attract new donors and partners.
  • Adheres to Board reporting criteria and utilizes as basis for informing both the ESFI Board and NEMA’s Board, to include regular assessments of progress against the annual budget, planned milestones and challenges encountered.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated professional accomplishment in leading non-profit associations / foundations, with strong track record in launching and executing fundraising campaigns that substantively advance the long-term vision and mission of organizations.
  • Executive gravitas to work closely with senior executives participating on the ESFI Board of Directors, engage with donor community, build and maintain relationships with peer associations, lead staff, and serve as ESFI spokesperson to the media.
  • At least ten years of experience in operations and program leadership: information campaigns, community outreach, stakeholder events, and educational programs.
  • Strong business acumen and well-developed budgeting, financial management and execution, to include ability to manage and evaluate vendors within a competitive solicitation model; strong strategic planning and project planning skills essential.
  • Proven ability to inspire, develop, motivate through clear and convincing written, and spoken communications, with executive presence in all settings.
  • Builds effective, enduring lines of communications with relevant domestic and international regulatory agency officials (such as federal and state legislators; donor company executives and employees; other associations and professional societies that are engaged on ESFI issues; and work with NEMA staff at all levels.
  • Experience in manufacturing / electrical safety or related safety industries or associations is a plus.
  • Experience in public policy advocacy at federal, state, and local levels is desirable .
  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field is required.
