ROSSLYN, Va., October 29, 2021—The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) is set to publish a new version of ANSI/NEMA IM 60000-2021 Industrial Laminated Thermosetting Products by 2022. This new edition covers the manufacture, testing, and performance of laminated thermosetting products in the form of sheets, rods, and tubes. It also includes a new format that consolidates the requirements for the physical and electrical properties of the individual NEMA Grades. Previously designated as NEMA LI 1-1998 (R2011), it was developed by the NEMA Insulating Material Section and will be published as an American National Standard.
Originally developed in 1927, new material grades were added since the second half of the 20th century to reflect advancement in the industry and demands for higher performance laminate thermosetting products. New materials address the ever-evolving need for weight reduction, mechanical strength, thermal endurance, flame resistance, and electrical performance. NEMA LI 1 material grades such as XXX, CE, G7, G10, G11, FR4, and GPO3 are referenced in millions of customer drawings and specifications ranging from electrical and medical equipment to military and satellite telecommunication. The inclusion of NEMA Grades in a commercial document implies a contractual agreement of material properties being met in business transactions.
“The new IM 60000 carries the tradition of adding new material grades to reflect current and future needs of the industry. It also includes SI units (International System) for international audiences and facilitates the comparison to other international Standards,” said Solomon Chiang, Director of Corporate Research and Development at the Gund Company/Chair of the Industrial Laminates ANSI Standard Committee. “This Standard provides a guideline for design engineers to select insulation materials that meet end-product applications and long-term performance requirements and provides a reference point of expected material performance between the buyer and the seller. In the future, it will facilitate Standard harmonization to promote global commerce and trade.”
As the secretariat of the Committee on Industrial Laminating Thermosetting Products, NEMA is currently seeking new Members in the User and Testing Laboratory categories with a direct and material interest in the activities of NEMA IM 60000. Anyone who meets the membership criteria is invited to apply. All questions and inquiries should be directed to the NEMA IM 60000 Secretary at the following email: Khaled.Masri@NEMA.org.
