By 2035, half of global power generation will be from renewable energy resources, and power management company Eaton is helping the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) add more renewables to its grid. As the COVID-19 situation improved in China, Eaton helped move the Qinghai-Henan ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHV) project forward with the rapid delivery and commissioning of capacitors. Once completed, the project will be the world’s first UHV transmission system designed for the outward transmission of clean energy.
The project will enable SGCC to transmit 40 terawatt hours (Twh) of clean solar, wind and hydro energy over long distances to help reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 29.6 million tons each year and significantly improve energy availability in central China.
“Eaton has taken the Everything as a Grid approach to the energy transition and is helping customers strategically manage the addition of more renewables to their energy mix,” said Howard Liu, president of the Asia-Pacific region for Eaton. “The Qinghai-Henan project is vital to supporting growing power demand and promoting development and utilization of clean energy. In spite of the manufacturing and shipment challenges caused by the COVID-19 crisis, we’ve compressed timelines and mobilized our teams to expedite installation for essential utility projects in China and in countries around the world.”
Utilities need capacitors to move power over long distances. Eaton capacitors are used the world over to support reliable power transmission and improve grid efficiency, increase capacity and improve power quality. Eaton has provided capacitors to high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and UHV projects for decades.
Eaton’s electrical business is a global leader with deep regional application expertise in power distribution and circuit protection; power quality, backup power and energy storage; control and automation; life safety and security; structural solutions; and harsh and hazardous environment solutions. Through end-to-end services, channel and an integrated digital platform and insights Eaton is powering what matters across industries and around the world, helping customers solve their most critical electrical power management challenges.
