Code Alert: Iowa, 23 September 2011

On September 15, 2011 the state electrical board voted to adopt the 2011 National electrical Code (NEC) with amendments. The anticipated effective date is January 1, 2012. Back on August 18 during the public hearing in Des Moines there was considerable opposition from the Iowa Homebuilders Association (IHBA) opposing the deletion of the amendments in Iowas 2008 NEC adoption regarding GFCI receptacles.

IHBA representatives that were present at the hearing were expressing the same issues as in the past with reliability of plugging sump pumps and freezers into GFCI protected receptacles. However, the Iowa Electrical Board passed with a 5/4 vote to retain those exceptions in 210.8. See following code language:

504.1(2) Add the following exceptions to section 210.8(A)(5):

  1. Exception No. 1 to (5): Receptacles that are not readily accessible.

  • Exception No. 2 to (5): A single receptacle or a duplex receptacle for two appliances located within dedicated space for each appliance that, in normal use, is not easily moved from one place to another and that is cord-and-plug connected in accordance with 400.7(A)(6), (A)(7), or (A)(8).

  • Receptacles installed under the exceptions to 210.8(A)(5) shall not be considered as meeting the requirements of 210.52(G).
