9 October California

State of California

This is an addendum to the California code alert of October 8.

The triennial cycle for the adoption of the 2016 California Building Standards Code is currently underway.  This code, collectively known as Title 24, is based on the 2014 edition of the National Electrical Code, the 2015 editions of the International Building, Residential, Fire and Existing Building Codes, the 2015 editions of the Uniform Plumbing and Mechanical Codes, and the 2016 edition of the California Green Building Code (a.k.a., CalGreen, unique to California).  The California Energy Code (Title 24, Part 6) is adopted under a separate rulemaking process.

The California Building Standards Commission is tentatively scheduled to adopt the 2016 Title 24 codes at a public hearing on December 16, 2015.  There are currently 45-day public comment periods open for all the codes according to the following schedule:

  • September 11 – October 26, 2015:  Building, Residential, Fire
  • October 9 – November 23, 2015:  Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, CalGreen

The codes with any proposed state agency amendments, as well as public comment forms, can be viewed at the Building Standards Commission website. (Note:  Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, CalGreen amendments should be posted shortly)
