State of Alabama

The Alabama Department of Finance, Division of Construction Management (formerly the Alabama State Building Commission) has set an effective date of July 1, 2016 for the updated Alabama State Building Code. The State Building Code applies to all State Buildings and Construction, Schools (Public and Private), Hotels/Motels, and Motion Picture Theaters. The codes and standards adopted by the Alabama Building Commission as the State Building Code are:

  • 2014 National Electric Code (NFPA 70)  
  • 2013 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code (NFPA 72)                                   
  • 2015 International Building Code (IBC)
  • 2015 International Fire Code (IFC)                                         
  • 2015 International Plumbing  Code (IPC)                                                 
  • 2015 International Mechanical Code (IMC)                                             
  • 2015 International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC)
  • 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design                                                 
  • 2013 ASHRAE Standard 90.1 Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings

The transition from the current State Building Code to the revised State Building Code will begin July 1, 2016 and will include a six-month grace period to allow current projects to either complete the review process or to transition to the new code. All submittals must comply with the revised State Building Code after the six-month grace period has ended on January 1, 2017.
