State of South Carolina

On August 26, 2015, the South Carolina Building Code Council updated the mandatory and permissive building codes to be used within South Carolina. The Council established the implementation date for local jurisdictions as July 1, 2016 for all codes.

Mandatory Building Codes adopted for use in South Carolina and which must be enforced by all municipalities and counties, beginning July 1, 2016, include the:

  • 2014 National Electrical Code;
  • 2015 International Building Code with SC modifications;
  • 2015 International Residential Code with SC modifications;
  • 2015 International Fire Code with SC modifications;
  • 2015 International Fuel Gas Code with SC modifications;
  • 2015 International Plumbing Code;
  • 2015 International Mechanical Code;
  • 2009 International Energy Conservation Code.

Permissive Building Codes adopted for use in South Carolina and which may be adopted and enforced by all municipalities and counties, beginning July 1, 2016 include the:

  • 2015 International Property Maintenance Code;
  • 2015 International Existing Building Code;
  • 2015 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code; and,
  • 2015 International Performance Code for Buildings and Facilities.
