National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) today announced that it will dedicate Paul Molitor as Interim Executive Director of the newly reorganized Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP 2.0).

In this role Mr. Molitor will lead the transition effort from the SGIP government-run organization, to an SGIP 2.0 that is industry led.

Molitor is the Assistant Vice President of Strategic Initiatives for NEMA and former Plenary Secretary of SGIP, which was established under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 to coordinate interoperability of Smart Grid devices and systems. It was operated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

“There’s a tremendous challenge facing the industry as we go from a government-funded model in SGIP, to an industry-funded model in SGIP 2.0.” said NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis. “Paul is a senior resource that has led the NEMA Smart Grid effort since its infancy. He has SGIP leadership and startup company experiences in his background, both of which will be valuable for SGIP 2.0.”

SGIP 2.0 will receive part-time support in this effort from Gregory Obenchain of Edison Electric Institute (EEI) and Don von Dollen of Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).

The term of Molitor’s assignment is expected to run through the end of 2012.

NEMA is the association of electrical equipment and medical imaging manufacturers, founded in 1926 and headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. Its member companies manufacture a diverse set of products including power transmission and distribution equipment, lighting systems, factory automation and control systems, and medical diagnostic imaging systems. Worldwide annual sales of NEMA-scope products exceed $120 billion.
