Energy Policy

NEMA Recommendations for Clean Energy and Economic Stimulus - December 2008 (76.9 KB)

NEMA believes and supports an energy policy that is comprehensive in scope and application. Energy policy must address energy efficiency and conservation, energy production and supply, energy transmission and distribution, as well as promotion of new technologies that promise greater efficiency and environmental protection. NEMA members are at all stages of the electrical energy process – from turbines and generators, to transformers and power cable, to lighting, motors, circuit breakers, and controls at the consumer and end-user points.

A balanced and comprehensive approach to national energy needs to address the following NEMA principles. These principles guided NEMA's legislative advocacy during the development of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

  • A comprehensive electrical energy policy should rely on affordable, proven technology to address energy supply and demand.
  • Market-based incentives and solutions should be the primary vehicle to enhance energy efficiency, production, transmission and distribution, and conservation. NEMA recognizes that on a case-by-case basis there is value in government intervention in such targeted areas as:
    • Research and development
    • Incentives to invest in energy efficient technology
    • Promotion of energy efficiency programs and standards
    • Removal of barriers to transmission grid improvement and increased generation capacity
  • An efficient transportation network is needed to move energy from producer to consumer. Technologies exist to expand electricity transmission using existing corridors.
