How to Purchase a NEMA Standard

NEMA publishes over 500 technical documents each year, and has partnered with IHS to distribute standards and other technical publications.  Most standards publications cost less than $60.00 and are available in PDF format for electronic download via a credit card transaction on IHS’ secure server.

How to Buy a Standard

First, find the standard you need using NEMA’s standards search engine.  Each standard has a direct link to the IHS website to purchase the document.

Current NEMA standards may be ordered online, by mail, or by telephone. Standards which have been rescinded (see database in the right column) are only available by calling IHS.

To order directly from the IHS website, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you will first need to establish an account with a valid credit card number.  For more information on IHS' terms and conditions, please consult the IHS website.  Or, you may call the IHS office directly:

Formats Available

Each description in the standards database indicates the available formats, pricing, and descriptive information for the particular standard of interest.

  • Some standards publications are part of a larger series, such as the DICOM standard, or have multiple revisions that were published separately over a period of time, such as the MW 1000-1997 standard.
  • While this allows prior owners a chance to obtain the new information at a reduced cost rather than re-purchasing the standard, this might impact a new purchaser.
  • Please read standard descriptions carefully to determine if this applies to the particular standard of interest.
  • The majority of NEMA standards are available in hard copy and electronic formats.  (In order to view the electronic downloads, you will need to download the latest copy of the Adobe Acrobat Reader [available free of charge] from the Adobe website.)
  • Some very lengthy standards, such as Magnet Wire (MW 1000), Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM), and Motors and Generators (MG 1), are available in CD-ROM formats for ease of use.
  • Bulk and network pricing options are also available; quantities are noted on the IHS website.
