The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), on behalf of its medical division, the Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance (MITA), published
NEMA RT 1-2014
Gating Interface. This standard is to enhance the safety and effectiveness of radiation therapy (RT) treatments.
According to MITA Executive Director Gail Rodriguez, this first-of-its-kind standard reflects the commitment of RT manufacturers to continue improving patient safety.
“RT 1 will improve targeting accuracy and reduce normal tissue irradiation so patients can reap the benefits of this treatment without risk of damaging adjacent healthy tissue,” she said.
RT 1 provides key technical information to developers for synchronizing equipment with the patient’s breathing and other movements during cancer treatment. Movement outside of the standard’s predetermined window will trigger an appropriate signal. This motion monitoring information can be used to improve targeting accuracy through treatment delivery interventions in the event that the target moves from the planned position. The standard defines specific technical “fail safe” provisions to improve interoperability among devices from various manufacturers.
