Introducing The Patrick Project

3/17/2014 10:00 AM

By Phallan K. Davis, NEMA Public Relations Specialist

Meet Patrick Hughes, NEMA’s Policy Director for High-Performance Buildings. In a year-long series titled “The Patrick Project,” NEMA will follow Patrick’s efforts to make his home, which he shares with Amy, his fiancée, more energy-efficient.

Although work-life balance experts might recommend not bringing your work home, Patrick wouldn’t have it any other way. Having solar panels installed on the home’s roof was priority number one, and the couple worked with SolarCity for the installation of this solar array.

As an environmentalist, Patrick shared that this installation fits with his world vision and how he sees the future. He is doing in his own home what he encourages other homeowners, commercial building owners, and manufacturers to do in their buildings—adopt high-performance technologies and systems to increase the energy efficiency, safety, resilience, sustainability, productivity, and security of their buildings. Many of the technologies that are making this home more efficient are manufactured by NEMA member companies.

One solar panel at a time, the home will work smarter, not harder. Many NEMA member products are incorporated into the solar array, including an ABB/Power-One inverter, multiple Eaton safety disconnect switches, conduit from Allied Tube and Conduit, and a Landis+Gyr net meter.

Apart from the home’s solar panel installation, the couple is replacing all of their traditional incandescent light bulbs with LEDs and CFLs, installing building automation systems like occupancy and daylight sensors for lighting, and using USB charger/tamper-resistant receptacles.

During the course of The Patrick Project, he will provide video, podcasts, and blog updates on his journey to make his home more energy-efficient, including why he decided to undertake this project and the cost-savings achieved so far. Be sure to monitor NEMA’s Facebook and Twitter pages to keep up with the latest developments. Follow the conversation on Twitter at #thepatrickproject.
