How to Save Money and Resources—Baselining Electrical Energy Consumption
by Steve Montgomery, P.E, COO, 2D2C, Inc., from NEMA's electroindustry magazine.
Variable electricity pricing has long been the norm for commercial and industrial buildings. Now, many utilities are using variable pricing for residential customers, too. In North America, the most common variable pricing model consists of higher prices at higher demand times. Usually the utility company objective from variable electricity pricing is to better align demand with grid supply.
Many customers think the change from fixed electricity pricing to variable pricing results in higher electricity bills. Smart conservation in conjunction with variable electricity pricing, however, can result in lower bills without modifying lifestyle, comfort, or building function. Shifting consumption to non-peak demand periods may impact lifestyle, comfort, or function, but may also result in utility bill savings.

Tinted Windows that Generate Electricity
A German company borrows the materials and manufacturing process of OLED displays to make a new kind of solar panel. The technology is similar to what's used for OLED displays for phones and flat-screen TVs. The panels are flexible, and far lighter than conventional solar panels, yet in some locations—particularly where it's hot or cloudy—they can generate just as much electricity as a conventional solar panel.
