NEMA Leads Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Harmonization Efforts

Representatives from the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) led a meeting on July 20 to discuss standards harmonization requirements for electric vehicle supply equipment systems (EVSE) in North America.
Michael Mahan, Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Section chair said, “Electric vehicle manufacturers are looking for certainty in the design and performance of EV charging systems before they move ahead with large scale production and distribution of EVs across North America.”
During the meeting, representatives from Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Association of Standardization and Certification (ANCE), and various Canadian, Mexican, and U.S. stakeholders focused on how to rapidly harmonize the following UL standards with CSA Technical Information Letters (TIL):

State Department Urges Companies to Begin ”Conflict Minerals” Due Diligence: Although the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has not yet issued final regulations to implement the “conflict minerals” due diligence and reporting requirements from the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act, the State Department is advising companies to begin their supply-chain inquiries based on guidance issued by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Businesses that are part of a public company’s supply chain should also be aware of the pending SEC requirements, which are expected to be published later this month. Industrial, Building Efficiency Bill Passes Senate Committee: By an 18–3 vote, the Senate Energy Committee approved S 1000 The Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act of 2011. While the Committee removed the consensus appliance standards provisions that have already passed the committee, the key components of the bill are revolving loan funds for building and industry energy-efficiency improvements, NEMA Premium Transformer rebate program, and NEMA-supported policies that encourage the federal government to adopt advanced metering and electric vehicles. NEMA‘s Energy Efficiency Coalition for Industry, High Performance Buildings Council, and Transformer Section are garnering congressional support for legislation that encourages private investment in energy efficiency technologies. —National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA)

The U.S. Department of Commerce is organizing a U.S.-Mexico Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy Roundtable, September 26–27, 2011 in Mexico City.
