(ROSSLYN, VA)—The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) today applauded Senators Evan Bayh (D-IN) and George Voinovich (R-OH) for introducing “The Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Act” in the U.S. Senate. Their bill seeks to ensure continued improvement in domestic interagency coordination, as well as international coordination among nations committed to fair trade and shutting down counterfeiting and piracy networks. The legislation will also require the executive branch to report to Congress about progress toward meeting national goals.
“Counterfeiting in electrical products is on the rise and represents a growing public safety concern in addition to sales lost to the criminal enterprises that finance piracy and counterfeiting,” said NEMA President Evan Gaddis. “More often than not, the counterfeit electrical product is a substandard product and an unsafe product. This is well documented.”
“NEMA envisions continuous improvement in our domestic and international efforts to suppress illegal trade in counterfeit products in the years to come,” said Gaddis. “This is an effort that requires the collaboration of both the executive branch and Congress in assuring that there are adequate public resources and commitment to meet the nation’s goals.” NEMA is also working with the Bush Administration’s Strategy Targeting Organized Piracy (STOP) program, which has brought about improvements in the development of national anti-counterfeiting policies and the coordination of law enforcement efforts.
NEMA is encouraging the Senate leadership, as well as the House leadership, to make “The Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Act” a priority in the 110th Congress.
