(ROSSLYN, VA) - The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently released state-level shipment data on its NEMA Premium® program, which demonstrates a significant increase in each of the six reported categories. The data show that in 2001–2002 the total net units shipped went up approximately 30 percent. In 2002–2003 there was a 14 percent increase over the previous years. The data suggest a growing demand for premium-efficiency motors.
The NEMA Premium® Energy Efficient Motors Program, established by member companies of the NEMA Motor and Generator Section, provides premium efficient products that meet the needs and applications of users and original equipment manufacturers based on a consensus definition of “premium efficiency” and use of the NEMA Premium logo for premium products. NEMA Premium sets efficiency standards for an increased range of motors. Unlike the standard under the Energy Policy Act of 1992, NEMA Premium efficiency may be applied to general purpose, as well as definite and special purpose products from 1-500 horsepower operating on low or medium voltage power. NEMA Premium motors rely directly on existing NEMA Motors and Generators (MG 1) design standards to assure replacement characteristics necessary for trouble free motor user application.
NEMA recently presented the results of its motor shipment research at a meeting with the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE). NEMA, CEE, and an array of sponsors demonstrated the growing strength of the Motor Decisions Matter campaign, which promotes system efficiency by encouraging industrial and commercial customers to evaluate their motor repair and replacement options, and to develop a motor management plan before motors fail.
“This latest data is a progress report on how well the motor industry is doing to transition motor users to the more efficient motors,” says Rob Boteler, chairman of NEMA’s Motor and Generator Section. “Premium efficient motors can dramatically cut energy costs, increase productivity, and conserve energy. This just makes sense, particularly in light of the nation’s energy crunch.”
“The NEMA Premium program provides a unique benefit to our members, the electroindustry, and consumers by promoting energy efficient technologies that save money and improve system reliability,” says NEMA President Malcolm O’Hagan. “The latest data are a testament to the significance and success of the program.”

NEMA is the leading trade association in the United States representing the interests of electroindustry manufacturers. Founded in 1926 and headquartered near Washington, D.C., its 400 member companies manufacture products used in the generation, transmission and distribution, control, and end-use of electricity. Domestic shipments of electrical products within the NEMA scope exceed $100 billion.
The Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE), a nonprofit public benefits corporation, develops national initiatives to promote the manufacture and purchase of energy-efficient products and services. Their goal is to induce lasting structural and behavioral changes in the marketplace, resulting in the increased adoption of energy-efficient technologies.
