Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution (PTD) received an order from GECOL (General Electricity Company of Libya) to supply five district network control centers. The contract was signed recently in Tripoli, during a visit to Libya by German Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and a German business delegation.
The order is worth around 180 million euros, and is the largest received so far by the power systems control segment of the Siemens Group.
In the context of expansion and modernization of the Libyan power supply grid, Siemens will install new network control centers in the regions of Tobruk, Benghazi, Tripoli, Zawia, and Sebha. The five new network control centers will analyze all of the information on the operating state of the grid. Switching operations will be performed from a main control room, enabling better reaction to system disturbances and decreasing the risk of blackouts. The power system control equipment is based on Sinaut Spectrum, one of the latest software developments produced by Siemens PTD. The control centers are scheduled for commissioning in early 2008.
