Disposal Ban

  • Thermostats, thermometers, switches, lamps, medical or scientific instruments or electric relays.  No ban for batteries.

Labeling

  • Thermostats, thermometers, switches, lamps, medical or scientific instruments or electric relays. No label for batteries, products containing batteries and lamps, and cars. Lamp Wholesalers must provide information on spent lamp management.

Product Ban

  • Thermometers sold by prescription only, except those with button cells, thermostats, measuring devices, and switches and relays (except replacement switches) although the manufacturer can apply for an exemption. Button cell batteries as of July 1, 2011.

Manufacturer Collection/Recycle

  • Auto manufacturers must collect motor vehicle switches. Manufacturers who sold mercury thermostats in the state must establish and maintain a recycling program, and must work cooperatively with state regulatory officials to design and implement financial incentives to recycle for both contractors and homeowners.
  • Maine Department of Environmental Protection and Public Utilities Commission are directed to jointly develop a program “to support and expand the recycling of fluorescent lamps in the state, with a focus on household recycling.” Must report to the legislature by January 1, 2008.
