The Joint Committee on Administrative Rules (JCAR) has scheduled a public hearing for September 21, 2010 @ 9am to hear further testimony on the expansion of Arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCI) in one & two family dwellings in the Michigan Residential Electrical Code.
Over a period of several months, the Michigan Electrical Advisory Committee completed the entire review of the Michigan Residential Electrical code. During which time the committee thoroughly discussed the expansion of Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) in One & Two family dwellings with no resistance from the building community. However, during the public hearing on July 20, 2010 the Michigan Association of Homebuilders (MAHB) brought erroneous fire statistics challenging the states own fire numbers which caused the state to doubt there own analysis.
In response to that data, the State of Michigan Bureau of Construction Codes deleted the expansion of Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters in one & two family dwellings and kept the current language to bedrooms only. If this code language is adopted this will eliminate the enhancement of these proven fire safety devices from being expanded in one & two family dwellings. The question should be asked; should Michigan homeowners in one & two family dwellings have less fire protection then those living in multi-family dwellings?
It is anticipated that those opposed to the expansion of the AFCI will once again be present to plead their case. Those in support should also consider being present in order to support these proven safety devices to urge the JCAR Committee to reverse this proposed loss of fire safety in Michigan homes.
