The government sector is the single largest consumer of energy in the U.S. Besides office buildings, facilities include hospitals, schools, and military bases. Energy upgrades at government facilities can be handled through the budgeting process. As such, NEMA supports efforts for the government to lead by example in the use and deployment of energy efficient products and systems. These include lighting, motors, transformers, control systems.
NEMA has been active in working the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) in setting purchasing guidelines for energy efficient products, and in setting Energy Star product specifications for lighting, thermostats, transformers, and exit signs.
NEMA has encouraged government adoption of the NEMA Premium Electric Motor Program as a means to reduce energy consumption in federal facilities.
