ROSSLYN, Va.—On July 20, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) is hosting a meeting at Underwriters Laboratory’s (UL) Research Triangle Park North Carolina facility that will bring Canadian, Mexican, and U.S. stakeholders together to discuss standards harmonization requirements for electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) used in North America.

North American standards development organizations (SDOs) and NEMA EVSE manufacturers will explore options for rapidly creating a set of harmonized requirements for the purpose of testing and certifying their products throughout North America.

The success of electric vehicle (EV) market penetration is linked to its supporting infrastructure. While there are still many issues EV technologies must overcome, NEMA believes the safety and basic performance of the supply equipment associated with EVs are well-covered by an existing set of documents currently used to certify products including UL 2251–Safety Plugs, Receptacles, and Couplers for Electric Vehicles, UL 2231-1–Personnel Protection Systems for Electric Vehicle (EV) Supply Circuits: Particular Requirements for Protection Devices for Use in Charging Systems, and UL 2594–Outline of Investigation for Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment.

NEMA is the association of electrical and medical imaging equipment manufacturers. Founded in 1926 and headquartered near Washington, D.C., its approximately 450 member companies manufacture products used in the generation, transmission and distribution, control, and end use of electricity. These products are used in utility, industrial, commercial, institutional, and residential applications. The association’s Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) Division represents manufacturers of cutting-edge medical diagnostic imaging equipment including MRI, CT, x-ray, and ultrasound products. Worldwide sales of NEMA-scope products exceed $120 billion. In addition to its headquarters in Rosslyn, Virginia, NEMA also has offices in Beijing and Mexico City.
