Electroindustry Business Conditions Index


The EBCI indexes are based on the results of a monthly survey of senior managers at NEMA member companies and are designed to provide a measure of changes in the business environment facing electrical equipment manufacturers.

NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Conditions Index (EBCI) for current conditions in North America slipped for the second straight month in December, falling to 52.8 from 53.1 in November, but continued to point to improvement in the business environment by remaining above the 50-point mark. Confidence in future business conditions was slightly more widespread in December compared to November. NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Conditions Index (EBCI) for current conditions in North America slipped in November, falling from 56.3 in October to 53.1, but showed signs of improvement in the business environment by remaining above the 50-point mark. In contrast, confidence in future business conditions increased in November. The EBCI for North American conditions six months hence inched upward to 81.3 from 71.9 in October. NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Conditions Index (EBCI) for current conditions in North America measured 56.3 in October, down slightly from 56.7 in June, the last time the index was released. Neverthless, October’s result, coming in above the 50-point mark, showed signs of improvement in the business environment. Respondents remained optimistic on balance regarding confidence in future business despite a fall in the October EBCI for North American conditions six months forward to 71.9 from 83.3 in June. NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current conditions in North America rose in June, up from 55.9 in May to 56.7, and continued to show signs of improvement in the business environment by remaining above the 50-point mark for the eighth consecutive month. The share of respondents that reported conditions improved in June decreased to 33.3% from 47.1% in May while 20% of respondents reported that conditions deteriorated, down from 35.3% in May. NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current conditions in North America declined in May, falling from 66.7 in April to 55.9, but continued to show signs of improvement in the business environment by remaining above the 50-point mark. Confidence in future business conditions also declined in May but remained firmly in positive territory. NEMA’s April Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American business conditions indicated continued improvement in the business environment, as the index edged up to 66.7 from the 65.9 recorded in March. By contrast, confidence in future business conditions declined in April but remains firmly in positive territory. NEMA’s March Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American business conditions continues to indicate improvement in the business environment despite slipping in March. The index registered 65.9 in March, down from the 73.8 recorded in the first two months of 2013. By contrast, confidence in future business conditions continues to build, as the EBCI for North American conditions six months hence climbed by nearly 10 points in March to 90.9, the highest level for the forward looking index in a decade. NEMA’s January Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American business conditions built on the momentum generated at the end of 2012, climbing for a fifth month in a row to 73.8. The nearly 10 point gain relative to December brought the index to its highest level since the Great Recession. Moreover, the survey’s measure of the degree of change in current North American conditions was in positive territory for a third straight month.
